Incorporate Gold into Your Sign: 23K Gold Leaf Signs will Elevate the Appeal for Your Business Brand

Gold Leaf Signs: Unmatched Eloquence

Gold leaf signs give businesses the visual appeal to stand out. Gold adds an elegant touch to any lettering project, whether the signage is on canvas, wood, paper, or glass. We primarily create gold leaf signage for our customers seeking a timeless and elegant look for their business.

Although leaf lettering and signs have been used for decades and are somewhat old-fashioned, they look elegant. Thus, it’s still common to come across storefront windows, offices, and other businesses with gold leaf signage. While these signs are not the cheapest, they stand out in a world full of LED, vinyl graphics, and other types of displays.

This guide will discuss gold leaf signs, what it entails to make them, and the different types available. We will also explain why businesses should consider displaying the signs on their storefronts and offices. In the end, we’ll answer these three pertinent questions:
  • What are gold leaf signs?
  • How are the signages created?
  • Why choose gold leaf lettering?
That said, let’s get straight to it.

What Are Gold Leaf Signs?

Gold leaf signs are created by hammering gold into thin, lightweight sheets to make elegant, elaborate glass, wood, or canvas displays. The gold leaf we use makes signs of the highest quality. Often, the gold is hammered so thin that it allows light to pass through. As a result, our gold leaf signs are unmatched in terms of their brilliance. They can transform dull Montgomery County signs into elaborate pieces of art.

What is Gold Leaf?

As the name suggests, gold leaf is gold that we’ve beaten into thin sheets. We hit the gold leaf into thin sheets until it reaches a thickness of about 0.12 microns. For comparison, photocopy paper has a thickness of about 130 microns, while a human hair is 60 microns thick.

Gold leaf is so thin that blowing it can disrupt its structure. Likewise, touching a gold leaf with a finger would destroy it. You will often see gold leaf on picture frames and signs. In low light, the sheets give a warm golden glow, while in sunlight, they shine brilliantly. We use engine-turned gold leaf for those who want a more intricate design on their gold leaf lettering or design.

How are Gold Leaf Signs Made?

Typically, we use 23-karat yellow gold to create gold leaves, which we then layer over wood, canvas, or glass surfaces in a process called gilding. Gold leaf lettering has a long-established history, and we continue the tradition by applying the lettering by hand. We’ve maintained the decades-old tradition of gilding to create some of the most eye-catching signs.

The trick to creating the signs is using the right size and adhesive to hold the gold leaf in place. We also use machines and stencils to guarantee a perfect job. Depending on a clients’ specification, we may also use freehand letters to give the signs a more natural look and feel.

V Carved Gold Signs

Nowadays, it’s common to come across V-carved signs and logos, which feature a 23K leaf finishing. In our case, we fabricate this type of sign from High-Density-Urethane (HDU), carve them with a colorful face from a 1-3 inch thick sheet of HDU, and then finish with a gold leaf.

We primarily use gold leaf on a sign with graphics and letters with an angular surface to create a timeless visual appeal when creating V-carved gold leaf signs. In addition, this helps to illuminate the light that bounces off the reflected angled surfaces of the sign.

Sandblasted Gold Signs

A Sandblasted 23K leaf sign is one of our signature products. We create the sign to make your brand stand out. We make the sign by propelling a stream of sand under high pressure to smooth the display surface of the sign. HDU is our most popular substrate for making dimensional sandblasted gold leaf signs.

After smoothing the surface, we’ll apply leaf by hand before using a soft brush to polish off the excess gold to create the perfect shine for the sign. The sign design, carve, and finish is created to your specifications and to make your brand stand out.

Gilding: Gold Sign Techniques

All techniques we use to create gold leaf signs are only possible because the leaf is thin, fragile, and lightweight. Generally, the methods boil down to flat and raised gilding.

The gold sheets look like a solid and smooth lump on the media you intend to decorate in raised gilding. Raised gilding in posters and signs is a variation of the traditional gold leaf technique since it is doable on rigid surfaces (wood, glass, etc.). If done on a flexible surface, the leaf is likely to crack or come off.

On the other hand, flat gilding is achievable by sticking leaf onto the desired surfaces using an adhesive. The result is often striking and more subtle and nuanced than raised gilding. However, it may also appear dramatic if done on large posters. Generally, flat gilding is easier to do than raised gilding.

Whether we’re undertaking flat or raised gilding, we ensure that no gold gets wasted. Similarly, we create the same gilded look in all our projects to give our Bucks County signs a natural look.

Gold leaf signs can have a stencil foundation. In this case, stencils help to create intricate and complex gold leaf lettering without mistakes. Before smoothing it onto the project, apply a repositionable adhesive at the back of the plastic stencil to make it stay in place. After that, apply size to the letter shapes on the stencil.

Why Choose Gold Signs vs Just Painted?

Gold is the most precious metal, and including it in a brand’s signage gives it a high-end, elegant look. Natural gold leaf shines bright in the sunshine and continues to do so for years to come. So, rather than choosing typical signs, more people opt for the longevity that gold signs offer.

Sign manufacturing using gold or incorporating leaf embellishments to signage adds flair, value, and distinction. Since many businesses use LED lighted signs and vinyl graphics displays, gold leaf signs can add a timeless appeal to your brand.
